This week we spent some time trying to understand Hamurrabi's Code(the first set of written laws known) and what these laws do for us today. In groups we created a language with a cypher used to decode. Then they were to write 10 laws that would help society. The majority of the students thought this would be an easy project, until their laws were put under scrutiny. Many struggled with deciding on laws after we talked about what repercussions could come about from implementing such laws. They in the end realized the value of making a law and not allowing them to be arbitrary or contradictory.
This coming week we will finish up Mesopotamia and begin a unit on ancient Egypt. The students will begin making Egyptian burial tombs and either papyrus or canopic jars. We may need parent help toward the end of the week but I will send out a SignUp Genius to let you know.
In science we are studying Astronomy. The kids went out to the field in the back to gain a bit of perspective of the size of the Solar System. We will be discussing the benefits of the moon and sun this week. After they do that we will be starting on the planets individually.
I hope they, are having fun and hope that you all are having a good weekend.
